Zero Operational Downtime

Team Medical’s energy journey began with a simple goal: reduce operational energy costs at one of its most energy-intensive facilities. As one of Australia’s leading medical wholesalers, the company’s Seven Hills warehouse runs refrigeration, cold rooms, HVAC systems and logistics equipment around the clock, making energy consumption a significant operational expense.

After initially installing a 100kW rooftop solar system with Smart Commercial Energy, the business quickly saw impressive performance and cost savings. With additional roof space still available, a second 100kW solar system was later installed to further offset daytime electricity consumption and maximise onsite generation.

As solar generation increased, the facility began producing excess energy during daylight hours. Rather than exporting that power back to the grid at low feed-in rates, Team Medical wanted a way to store and use the energy later into the evening, reducing reliance on grid electricity while improving overall sustainability performance and long-term operational efficiency.

THE CHALLENGE

While battery storage had always been part of the long-term vision, integrating it into an existing commercial solar system presented several technical challenges.

The site’s switchboards were already operating close to capacity following the installation of the existing solar infrastructure. Traditional battery integration would have required significant switchboard upgrades and additional electrical works to accommodate a hybrid inverter system capable of both charging and discharging battery energy. This would have added further complexity, cost, and installation time to the project.

At the same time, Team Medical’s operations left little room for disruption. With cold rooms, freezers and vaccine storage operating continuously, maintaining reliable power throughout installation was critical. Any interruption to these systems had the potential to impact temperature-sensitive medical products and daily operations.

“After we had already installed two grid inverters, the switchboards on site were essentially at capacity… so we had to come up with another solution.”

THE SOLUTION

To overcome these constraints, Smart Commercial Energy implemented a more efficient and flexible approach using the SunGrow Power Keeper commercial hybrid inverter system.

Rather than undertaking a costly switchboard upgrade, one of the existing 100kW grid inverters was replaced with the Power Keeper in a like-for-like swap. This allowed the project team to integrate battery storage using the existing switchboard connection point while maintaining system capacity and functionality. Existing solar panels connected to the previous inverter were simply re-terminated into the new hybrid inverter, creating a streamlined integration pathway without major infrastructure changes.

The modular battery design also provided a highly compact footprint, with the entire system installed within a single car space onsite. Installation was completed over just a few days with no operational disruption to the facility, allowing Team Medical’s refrigeration and cold storage systems to continue operating uninterrupted throughout the process.

“We've got the roof, we've got sunshine. There's a payback period which is higher return than what our typical margins are anyway. So let's put our money into that — and it feels good.”

THE RESULTS

The Team Medical Supplies facility now operates nearly off grid during daylight hours, with solar generation meeting the majority of the site’s daytime energy demand while the battery system supports operations into the evening.

During summer months, the battery carries refrigeration, cooling systems, and warehouse operations through until 9–10 pm, while lower winter cooling demand means they are self-sufficient even further into the night. As a result, grid electricity is now primarily relied on only overnight.

The project has significantly reduced Team Medical’s reliance on grid electricity while lowering the organisation’s overall energy footprint. Beyond reducing operational costs, the project has also strengthened the company’s broader sustainability strategy by improving energy resilience, reducing emissions, and laying the foundation for ongoing carbon reporting and energy performance tracking.

The project also demonstrates how commercial solar and battery storage can evolve. Rather than implementing everything at once, Team Medical adopted a staged approach, expanding its energy infrastructure as technology matured and battery economics improved. The result is a scalable and future-ready energy solution designed to continue evolving alongside the business.
