National Retail Solar Rollout

Since 2017, Smart Commercial Energy has partnered with Officeworks to deliver rooftop solar across its national store network. What began with a single installation has grown into one of Australia's largest commercial retail solar programs, with more than 60 stores now generating renewable energy and additional sites continuing to be delivered.

The Bundoora store is one of the latest milestones in that journey. Its 96kW rooftop solar system is expected to reduce electricity costs by around 30%, helping Officeworks generate more of its own renewable energy while supporting its long-term sustainability objectives.

For a national retailer with more than 170 stores, every installation contributes to a larger strategy—reducing operating costs, lowering emissions, and building a more resilient energy future.

THE CHALLENGE

Installing rooftop solar across a national retail network requires far more than designing an individual solar system.

Every store has different operational requirements, energy consumption patterns, building characteristics, and stakeholder considerations. Projects must be carefully coordinated with landlords, store operations and delivery partners to minimise disruption while maintaining consistent quality across every installation.

For Officeworks, the challenge overall has been to implement a scalable commercial solar program capable of delivering reliable performance across a growing portfolio of retail sites. Increasingly, an additional goal is to support the organisation's long-term sustainability objectives.

"Our approach to reducing emissions is by using less energy. So, investing in energy efficiency initiatives like our LED upgrades and our building energy management systems.

We have [more than] 170 stores nationally, and [as of 2025] 60 of those have solar panels installed on them with the aim to get as many as we can with solar energy systems installed.” Says Officeworks Spokesperson.

THE SOLUTION

Smart Commercial Energy developed a repeatable delivery model that combines detailed engineering with consistent project management, enabling Officeworks to roll out commercial rooftop solar across multiple locations with confidence.

Every system is designed around the individual site's energy profile to maximise long-term performance and return on investment, while maintaining a consistent approach to quality, safety and delivery.

The Bundoora installation features a 96kW rooftop solar system that is expected to reduce electricity costs by around 30%. The system comprises quality equipment from trusted Smart partners, including Sunlock, whose contribution supported the successful delivery of the installation.

“Our installers are confident and familiar with the (selected) products: we know what works well and looks great, so it’s a bit of a no brainer when we’ve got a multitude of projects to deliver for one client.

That’s a big part of the value we bring to a multi-site customer like Officeworks who is really after a clear-cut experience on a roll out across the country.

A MILESTONE FOR INDUSTRY REPRESENTATION

Alongside delivering a reduction in emissions and energy costs, the Bundoora project showcased the growing breadth of female representation within Australia’s renewable energy sector.

Delivered by a 100% female team within Smart - including analysis, design, engineering, project management, applications coordination and publicity - the project also relied on a 95% female installation crew brought together by AWISE (Australian Women in Solar Energy). Additionally, the leads within Officeworks - from the Project Manager to the Store Manager – are female.

THE RESULTS

The Officeworks Bundoora solar installation demonstrates how large-scale retailers can leverage rooftop solar to reduce energy costs, lower emissions, and improve operational sustainability.

Delivered as part of a broader national rollout program, the project contributes to Officeworks’ transition towards cleaner, more efficient operations while highlighting the value of long-term partnerships in delivering renewable energy infrastructure at scale.

The installation is expected to deliver:

  • Approximately 30% reduction in electricity costs
  • Increased on-site renewable energy generation
  • Reduced operational emissions
  • Improved long-term energy performance
  • Continued progress towards Officeworks' sustainability goals
