Brief

Smart Commercial Energy is seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer to join our Projects team.

As a leader in the commercial solar and storage space, we design and deliver complex energy solutions across Australia. With strong project flow and a growing pipeline, this role presents an opportunity to step into a position with real ownership, technical leadership, and impact.

Based in our North Sydney office, with regular site travel, you’ll report to the Head of Engineering and play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering outcomes while mentoring and supporting the broader team.

Role

The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for leading the engineering design and technical delivery of a portfolio of projects ranging from 100kW to multi-MW systems.

This role goes beyond design execution — you will take ownership of engineering quality, support Project Managers through delivery, and contribute to improving how we design and deliver projects across the business.

Responsibilities 

Engineering Delivery

• Lead the design of commercial solar projects from concept through to construction
• Produce and oversee design documentation including site plans, SLDs, protection diagrams, and monitoring schematics
• Ensure designs are buildable, compliant, and commercially optimised
• Act as the technical lead on complex or large-scale projects

Quality & Standards

• Review and sign off engineering outputs across the team
• Maintain high standards of accuracy and consistency across all documentation
• Ensure compliance with Australian Standards and DNSP requirements
• Contribute to improving internal design standards, templates, and workflows

Project Support

• Work closely with Project Managers to support delivery outcomes
• Assist with procurement, BOM development, and technical selections
• Support grid connection applications, structural coordination, and approvals
• Provide technical input during commissioning and project close-out

Team & Capability Development

• Mentor and support Project Engineers across live projects
• Assist with onboarding and development of junior engineers
• Contribute to building internal engineering knowledge and capability

Key Attributes

The ideal candidate will:

• Have strong experience in the design of grid-connected PV systems (C&I preferred)
• Hold CEC design accreditation (or be working towards it)
• Have a solid understanding of the electricity industry and relevant standards
• Be capable of independently managing complex projects
• Have experience reviewing or guiding the work of other engineers
• Be an independent thinker, able to identify and solve technical and procedural issues
• Be highly organised and comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Communicate clearly with internal teams, clients, and contractors
• Bring a practical, solutions-focused mindset to engineering challenges
